Photovoltaic Energy Harvesting for autonomous sensor technology

Bachelor or master thesis

At Fraunhofer, we invent the future - as the largest research institution for application-oriented research in Europe. At Fraunhofer IOSB-INA in Lemgo, we turn the latest scientific findings into technical innovations and thus want to make our contribution to shaping the future. Our mission is: "Empowering our Partners for the Digital Age". Directly at the Innovation Campus Lemgo, your chance is waiting to become part of our renowned research institution.

You want to gain experience in a science team and learn how research and development in the field of sensor technology, networking and development of new technology works?

Then you've come to the right place! Photovoltaic (PV) cells allow the conversion of ambient light into electrical energy. This energy is to be used to power sensors on the one hand and to enable wireless data communication on the other. Here, directed light signals are to be reused for both energy supply and communication.

The task:

Within the scope of a final thesis (bachelor thesis or research master thesis), preliminary investigations are to be carried out on the basis of an existing system to determine what energy a PV-based system can achieve indoors and what conditions exist for this. A corresponding optimized arrangement/alignment as well as an energy management should be designed and implemented for an exemplary sensor. The energy yield as well as the wireless communication will be optimized.

Requirements:

  • Secure German or English language skills in writing and speaking
  • Studies in mechatronics, electrical engineering, physics or studies with a scientific background
  • First programming experience for embedded systems, basics of electronics development, basics of measurement technology
