They know that those who come to Fraunhofer want to and can make a difference. For themselves, for us, and for the markets of today and tomorrow.

With around 800 employees at six locations, the Fraunhofer Institute for Optronics, System Technologies, and Image Exploitation is one of the largest Fraunhofer Institutes. The Fraunhofer IOSB-INA in Lemgo, as the location for the industrial automation of the IOSB, offers an extremely attractive working environment in a highly innovative key industry. We are one of the leading research institutions in the technology network “Intelligent Technical Systems East Westphalia Lippe it's OWL” and an important part of the dynamic science and business region of East Westphalia-Lippe. Our mission: “Empowering our Partners for the Digital Age.”

At Fraunhofer IOSB-INA, we are looking for reinforcement in the field of technical system interoperability. The focus here is on innovative solutions for the secure and efficient integration of heterogeneous systems in industrial automation. The aim is to research modern methods and standards for interoperability, such as OPC UA, Asset Administration Shell (AAS), or other relevant frameworks, and to implement them in practical applications. The approaches developed should contribute to enabling intelligent networking and seamless data exchange between machines, systems, and software platforms.

A particular focus is on providing training for industrial customers in order to convey the latest developments and technologies in the field of interoperability in a practical manner and to support their successful application in industry.

Here, you make a difference.

For this position, we are looking for a research assistant (m/f/d) who is willing to pursue a doctorate (or a postdoc) with in-depth knowledge in the areas of system integration, industrial communication, and computer science, as well as, ideally, interoperability standards and architectures.

What you will do with us

  • Research and development of innovative interoperability solutions for industrial automation
  • Design and implementation of interfaces and communication platforms for heterogeneous systems
  • Evaluation and further development of interoperability standards such as OPC UA and AAS
  • Training courses for industrial customers
  • Scientific research and technology transfer projects
  • Collaboration with industry and other research institutions

This is what you bring to the table

You have a university degree (M.Sc.) in computer science, automation technology, or related subjects with good to very good grades, extensive in-depth knowledge in the areas of system integration, industrial communication, and computer science, and ideally also in interoperability standards and architectures, as well as very good knowledge of at least one of the following programming languages: C# .NET, C++, Java, ANSI-C.

You have an independent, responsible, cooperative, and team-oriented approach to work and good written and spoken German language skills.

What we offer you

  • Flat hierarchies and freedom to take responsibility and contribute your own ideas
  • Continuous professional and personal development
  • The opportunity to pursue a doctorate

We value and promote the diversity of our employees' skills and therefore welcome all applications – regardless of age, gender, nationality, ethnic and social origin, religion, ideology, disability, sexual orientation, and identity. Severely disabled persons with equal qualifications will be given preference. Our tasks are diverse and adaptable – for applicants with disabilities, we work together to find solutions that optimally promote their abilities.

The weekly working time is 39 hours. The position is limited to 2 years. Employment, remuneration, and social benefits are based on the collective agreement for the public sector (TVöD). In addition, Fraunhofer may grant performance- and success-related variable remuneration components.

With its focus on future-oriented key technologies and the exploitation of results in business and industry, the Fraunhofer Society plays a central role in the innovation process. As a guide and driving force for innovative developments and scientific excellence, it helps shape our society and our future.
